Its Time to Recruit a Mall Santa and Ski Instructor
Its Time to Recruit a Mall Santa and Ski InstructorIts Time to Recruit a Mall Santa and Ski InstructorIts Time to Recruit a Mall Santa and Ski Instructor RossheimFor employers who expect surges in business this winter whether its holiday retail hiring, winter travel and recreation or year-end accounting now is the time to plan winter seasonal staffing. And to start executing on that plan. With ever-improving market conditionsand opportunities available for candidates, scrambling at the last minute will obviously create issues, says Dave Benjamin, finance and accounting manager at Addison Group in Austin, Texas.Your early investment in seasonal staffing will pay big dividends in the form of satisfied customers who are more likely to come back to you next winter. Here are staffing gurus best ideas for recruiting and hiring the best seasonal help.Start holiday staffing for retail now. Holiday retail hiring needs to ramp up gradually starting in mid-September, says Rhonda Arledge, regio nal vice president at Adecco Staffing for partes of Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana. Call centersfollow a bell curve, peaking a week after Thanksgiving.Winter staffing for finance and accounting cant wait until New Years. Financial professionals ranging from December grads to experienced tax accountants will be in high demand as the calendar flips to a new year.So tax firms, along with most industries with finance, accounting, clerical or tech functions, should begin hiring as early as October to secure top talent for year-end or winter projects, says Benjamin.tischset staffing levels to keep customers happy. For most businesses, the risk of losing under-served customers should be of greater concern than the risk of slightly higher seasonal labor costs. We determine the lost profit if our clients hire too many employees, versus the lost profit if they hire too few, says Caleb Ulku, principal of Ulku Logistics. Most owners err on the side of hiring too few employees to minimize expenses, b ut its safer to err on the side of too many, to assure appropriate customer service. Customers wont give them a break just because the store is busy.Make simple calculations to forecast demand for seasonal staffing. Ulku estimates optimal seasonal staffing levels by combining a businesss profit calculations with a demand forecast that compares this years local municipal sales tax collections to those of prior years.Measure the seasonal labor market early with hiring events. Beware holiday staffing and other seasonal labor markets can vary widely from year to year.We get the jump on many retailers by starting our hiring of roughly 2,700 workers so much earlier, says Danette LaFollette, vice president of human resources at 1-800-Flowers.com, which sells food gifts as well as flowers. LaFollette is bullish on hiring for the holidays. Our early hiring events yield 30 or 40 responses, versus 8 or 10 last year.Returning workers and employee referrals boost seasonal staffing quality. We st art with seasonal people we worked with last year, says Arledge. And well look for referrals from our own workforce. Employees earn cash rewards for successful referrals. We bring on 1,900 schi season employees, including culinary, ski instruction and mountain operations, for Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows50 percent return year to year, says Brittany Clelan, director of human resources for the California ski resorts.Dont just fill seasonal seats sell whats special. To attract seasonal workers who will fully engage, youve got to sell the big picture. The ski resorts recruitment strategy pitches a California lifestyle including the sunnier, drier climate to East Coasters who have come to dislike cold, gray, damp winters. We actively recruit in colleges, on their jobs boards and campuses, and we also focus on people who work summers in national parks, says Clelan.Be transparent about how much work youre offering. Were extremely aware of snow variability, and weve had some lean snow se asons over the past few years, says Clelan. A high percentage of our seasonal workers are part-time, and they often have an additional, more regular part-time job. We look for part-time workers who are flexible about hours. The resorts work to communicate clearly what days and hours seasonal employees can count on and what may vary due to weather.Plan for inevitable mid-season attrition. Given that some of your workers will quit before winter is over, its wise to build continuing hiring into your seasonal staffing plan. We post jobs starting in late September or early October and hire into mid-March, says Clelan. If your business sees multiple seasonal surges, never stop hiring. Are seasonal peaks a big part of your business? Then it may not make sense to ramp up and wind down the recruiting process several times a year. We make seasonal hiring a year-round process, says LaFollette.

Want to be successful in your 20s Do these 9 things
Want to be successful in your 20s Do these 9 thingsWant to be successful in your 20s Do these 9 thingsPeopledefine successin a lot of different ways. Some think itsa certain amount of money. Others define it as a way of living, a level of freedom. The truth is, you can define success a hundred different ways - the only thing that matters is whether or not youve honigwein the expectation you have for yourself.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreIf you ask fruchtwein people what they want out of life, however, almost everyone will say, in some way, that they want to be successful. They want the big promotion, the fancy car, the house on the hill, the powerful network, the list goes on. Unfortunately, because success is a subjective aim, very few people have any sort of actionable plan or even idea as to how theyre going toachievethe success they want so badly. They believe, if they sa y or think about it enough, success will just happen.Except it doesnt work like that. Here are the things you should start doing in your 20s to guarantee youll be successful - no matter what. The sooner you get started, the better.1. Start working on your emotional health, nowLife only gets busier.Too often, people say the phrase, I will once Im a bit further along. But then they get a bit further along, and nothing changes. They just keep saying, Ill do it when Im older. Later, when I have more time. But this is a dangerous cycle. Take 5 or 10 minutes, per day, and start practicing the habit of working on your emotional health now.2. Spend time with people who arent in their 20sYou dont learn as much spending time around people who are exactly where you are.You learn by surrounding yourself with people who are further along, who have been where you are and have moved to the next level. If youre in your 20s, then you want to spend time with people in their late 30s, 40s, 50s and above . Theyre the ones with the answers - not your friend who is 25 and still trying to figure things out for him or herself.3. Save and invest as much money as you possibly canInvestments benefit most from the variable of time. The sooner you can get started saving and investing, the more dramatic your gains will be over the long term.Business Insider published a great pieceon this about how much more money youd have for retirement if you started saving when you were 25 as opposed to 35.The difference is massive.Second, financial freedom doesnt come from buying new sneakers or mimosas during brunch. Financial freedom starts to happen when money becomes atoolfor you to use to make more money. It has to work for you - not the other way around. And the sooner you start practicing that skill, the faster youll get to a place where youre financially secure.4. Get rid of friends who arent going anywhere in lifeThis might sound harsh, but its true you are a direct reflection of the people arou nd you.At a certain point, its important to realize where people are headed in life, and how much time you want to continue investing in those relationships. You dont have to be mean about it, or stop talking to long-time friends entirely. But you also shouldnt keep spending two nights per week getting beers with your buddy who is entirely comfortable in his cubicle job - if thats not the sort of life you want for yourself.Friendships are investments.Invest wisely.5. Keep reading (even though youre out of school)So many people stop reading in their 20s.We live in the age of Netflix shows and podcasts, YouTube series and IGTV interviews. But the truth is, reading is a completely different experience. It slows you down. It forces you to think deeply. Its also one of the only forms of knowledge transfer that allows us to receive insights from those who can decades, even centuries, before us.The smartest people read - and you should too.6. Find a workout regime that supplements your p rimary aim in lifeSuccess is almost always rooted in some form of physical exercise. Even the chess titan, Bobby Fischer, swore by his exercise routineto stay in shape and focused for upcoming matches. When were young, we tend to only associate physical exercise with sports. But as we get older, physical exercise becomes one of the few ways we can maintain a relationship with ourselves - our gym time is our partieal time an early-morning run clears your head for the day.Instead of only associating exercise with getting fit, think of it as a routine to make you better in all aspects of your life.7. Dont let your hobbies dieWe all have things we love to do purely for fun.Unfortunately, they tend to fall to the wayside as life continues to take its course. Our hobbies become reprioritized. Our careers take over. Add in a family, kids, bills, vacations, etc., and next thing you know, it has been ten years since you picked up the guitar or wrote in your journal. But our hobbies are what ke ep us grounded. They help us remember not to take life too seriously, and to always make time to enjoy the journey.8. Find a mentor - and forgo short-term rewards for knowledge that will last a lifetimeEveryone in their 20s is so obsessed with becoming successfulas soon as possible. And while this sort of hunger to succeed is great, it should never cause you to make short-sighted decisions. For example, whats more valuable pitching your services for $1,000 but being treated as a vendor? Or performing your service for free but getting to work directly with the person you want to learn from the most?A lot of people would disagree with this sort of mentality, and yet its one of the greatest success shortcuts on the planet. The more you can give up short-term rewards, and invest in yourself, the slower things might be in the beginning but the higher your ceiling will ultimately become.9. Nurture your relationship with your significant otherI used to think you could only become successfu l (in your 20s) if you were 100% dedicated, obsessed with making progress, and, well, single. There are a lot of entrepreneurs, especially, who live by this sort of mentality - and even the ones that do have relationships will regularly de-prioritize their partner. And even their partner will eventually say, He always says he has to work, and theres no time for me.But this is a flawed approach to both business and life.Ive come to learn (through my own relationship) that having someone to share the journey with, to emotionally support you along the way, isnt going to hold you back. If anything, a life partner will make you better - which means its your responsibility to help nurture that relationship along the way. This article first appeared on Medium.

How to Practice for an Interview in 5 Steps
How to Practice for an Interview in 5 StepsHow to Practice for an Interview in 5 Steps What if I run into traffic on my way to the bewerbungsgesprch and get there late? What if I mess up one of my answers? What if I draw a total blank when my interviewer asks me if I have any questions for them?If youve ever been up for a position you really wanted before, then questions like unterstellung have probably raced through your head in the hours - or worse, throughout the night - before your big interview .Many people think of overwhelming anxiety as an inevitable parte of the interview process. But the truth is, your nerves can be greatly eased once you learn how to properly prepare for an interview. Not only will this make you feel a whole lot better going in - odds are, with a clear head, youll actually do a better job.Ready to learn how to walk into an interview with confidence, and knock it out of the park? Follow these five steps.Recruiters and hiring managers dont just want to know about your skills and experience - they also want to know how knowledgeable you are about the company. In fact, questions like What is the name of our CEO? and Who are our competitors? are both among the most commonly asked interview questions . But even if you dont encounter a question like this, looking up the basics of the company is still worthwhile.Use Glassdoor and online searches to learn about the companys industry, products, mission, names of leaders, competitors, recent nachrichten and more. Then, you can drop these tidbits of newfound knowledge throughout your responses - e.g., when asked Why do you want to work here? a candidate might say, The reason I decided to apply to this job was because of how much your mission resonates with me. I truly believe that making affordable, high-speed internet widely accessible will help bring the world closer together. This proves a few things a) youre passionate about the opportunity, b) youre a proactive self- starter with good critical thinking skills and c) youre a good culture fit for the company. You can also use this info to ask more informed questions of the interviewers themselves - more on that later.A lot of candidates stress out over not knowing what a recruiter or hiring manager is going to ask them. But in reality, youll get a lot of the same questions from one person to another. There are a few basic questions that youll almost certainly be asked - these include staples like Tell me about yourself, Why do you want to leave your current job? and What are your biggest strengths and weaknesses? If youre a data-driven job seeker, youll appreciate the list of the 50 Most Common Interview Questions that Glassdoor identified after sifting through tens of thousands of interview reviews. You can also use Glassdoors interview reviews to find out which questions they specifically ask at the company youre applying to, as well as which questions are common for your job title. Sure, you might be thrown an oddball interview question every now and then, but youll likely find that the vast majority of questions youre asked are ones that you can identify in advance. Now that you have an idea of which questions you could be asked, its time to think about how you will respond to them. Keep in mind that in general, interviewers want responses that are specific, positive, impactful and genuine. If you want to know what kind of answers recruiters and hiring managers are looking for from specific questions, check out Glassdoors How to Answer the 50 Most Common Interview Questions .Dont just think about what your response should entail - go ahead and write it down. You probably shouldnt write out full answers - that can result in you memorizing the responses verbatim, which can come across as too rehearsed - but making a bulleted list of key points you want to hit is a great idea. Try using the worksheet at the bottom of this blog post to sketch out your answers. After youve written down the key points you want to hit in common interview questions, its a good idea to hold a mock interview aloud with a friend or family member. Some people might feel a little shy about doing this, but brush these feelings aside as best you can - in my experience, this is the number one way to improve your odds of succeeding in an interview. Doing a dry run will allow you to get any mistakes you might make out of the way before it counts against you, and also helps you get valuable feedback, so dont skip this essential step. One of the questions youll almost always be asked by an interviewer is Do you have any questions for me? It might seem innocuous, but believe it or not, this is a very common area in which candidates trip up. Interviewers arent just asking this question to be nice - it serves as somewhat of a litmus test for whether or not youve done your research, are a good culture fit and demonstrate strong critical thinking skills.Use the research you gat hered in step two to help you craft intelligent, informed questions about the role and company that will give you a fuller picture of what its like to work there and what it takes to be successful. For example, if you learned that the company youre applying to is launching a new mobile app, you might say I read that your company is launching a new mobile experience soon. Can you tell me more about that, and how it relates to this position? You can also use this opportunity to dig into anything that hasnt been brought up yet or covered in sufficient detail, like company culture, how the company defines success and what drew your interviewer to the company.Congrats - if youve gotten through the previous four steps, youve already gotten the hard part out of the way Now, all you have to do is think through all the little logistical details of your interview. These can vary depending on what kind of interview it is - phone, video, in-person, etc. Here are a few things to keep in mind fo r some of the most common types of interviewsPreparing for an interview the right way does take some work on your part, but believe us - its worth the effort. 5 ways to have more productive meetings
5 ways to have more productive meetings5 ways to have more productive meetingsWhat are the magic ingredients for asuccessful meeting? A meeting in which participants build relationships, exchange ideas, unearth insights, make decisions and get the information they need to move work forward? We all know theres no magic that comes without preparation and hard work. But there are five basic principles that underlie successful meetings. Incorporate these five meeting principles throughout themeeting cycleand watch your meetings bloom.Principle 1 Every voice mattersDifferent perspectives enrich a conversation, strengthen a team and generally lead to better outcomes. Good meeting leaders establish asafe and open environmentin which participants can voice their concerns. You dont have to transform your entire organizations meeting culture to make every voice count in your meetings.Keep the group small and manageable by only inviting team members whose perspectives are needed in order to ach ieve the meeting objective. Make other participants optional and be sure they receive a copy of the meeting notes so they stay in the loop.Be respectful of peoples different communication styles and preferences. Use strategies that meet the needs ofintroverts and extroverts. Different ways of communicating information like text, charts and audiovisual clips can appeal todifferent learning styles. The priority is to make information clear and accessible to everyone in the group in order to optimize engagement.Principle 2 Everyone should come preparedMeeting preparation often starts with the meeting leader, but doesnt end there. Team members also need to prepare for the meeting. As a meeting planner, you facilitate meeting preparation by creating a thoughtfulagendain advance of the meeting. But if youre the only person who is ready for the conversation, you risk spending extra time during the meeting setting up the context, the conversation wandering aimlessly, and team members feelin g lost, not needed, or that theyve wasted their time. On top of all this, the objective isnt met and you find yourself scheduling another meeting to continue this conversation.Include meetingpre-workas part of the agenda that you share with participants ahead of time. Pre-work is an assignment for meeting participants so they know exactly what to do prior to the meeting. It often establishes context or prompts reflection, so the meeting time can be spent engaging more deeply in dialogue to move work forward.Influenceothers to prepare for meetings by asking for their help in the agenda creation process and sending them reminders about completing the pre-work.Setting up team preparation normswill help reinforce this behavior.Principle 3 abflug and end with intentionHow you begin and end your meetings can have more impact on its success than you might think. People enter the room (physically and virtually) with other topics on their minds. They may not even remember exactly which meeti ng they are walking into given a full day of meetings. Its critical tobegin the meeting thoughtfullyin order to support the mental transition into the meeting conversation. Similarly, the end of a meeting is often hurried with some people sneaking off to another meeting before this conversation has fully concluded. Ending the meeting with intention helps participants feel their time was well spent.Start by reminding participants why youre there and what you plan to accomplish. Ask participants to set aside distractions like cell phones and emails, and to engage in the meeting content. Use a quickcheck-in procedureto help your team focus on the conversation and quickly get everyone participating in the meeting.End the meeting with awrap-up sessionthat reviews the tasks and decisions made during the meeting. This ensures that next steps and outcomes are clear, there is closure and the group feels a sense of accomplishment.Principle 4 Think of your meetings as launching pointsNo matter how productive the conversation, if the meeting outcomes arent implemented, the meeting was, in some ways, still a waste. Next steps get left behind and decisions are forgotten, making it hard to continue the momentum. So why spend time clarifying follow up items if they are only going to be abandoned?Recordnotes, ideas, learnings, decisions and other information so it can be easilysharedand accessible in the future. Send meeting notes within 24 hours of the meetings completion and be sure to include non-meeting stakeholders who should be informed.Make sure someone is accountable for each action item so it gets completed. Transfer your tasks to your personal task ordnungsprinzip so those items dont fall through the cracks or use a systemthat automatically puts your tasks from meetings onto your to-do list.Principle 5 Create, iterate, then iterate your meeting process againTake the time to develop a process that works for your teams meetings. Creating a shared process will make it ea sier for everyone to support effective meetings. The time you spend upfront developing a system will pay off down the road. When you have a process in place, dont let it grow stale instead, continually reflect on and iterate the process.Conductteam review meetingsevery few months to review your current processes for meeting planning, facilitation and follow-through.If your organization does not have existing meeting processes, or youre trying to overhaul a team culture, let a model like theGetting Things Done (GTD)method or theMeeting Canoeinspire your process.Does your team practice any of these key principles? Which ones could you start implementing today? This article originally appeared onBusinessCollective.Mamie Kanfer Stewart is the Founder and CEO ofMeeteor.

NECs Cryptologic Technician Area
NECs Cryptologic Technician AreaNECs Cryptologic Technician AreaThe Navy Enlisted Classification (NEC) system supplements the enlisted rating structure in identifying personnel on active or inactive duty and billets in manpower authorizations. NEC codes identify a non-rating wide skill, knowledge, aptitude, or qualification that must be documented to identify both people and billets for management purposes.
